"Using the Arts in the Therapeutic Process" Conference at The Jewish Home
June 2, 2008
FAIRFIELD - Professionals serving the geriatric community are invited to attend a conference at The
Jewish Home for the Elderly entitled "Using the Arts in the Therapeutic Process" on June 12, 2008.
Registration starts at noon and the program will be from 12:30-3:30 PM. Speakers will explain the purpose
of creative arts therapies and demonstrate how the arts can be used effectively with older clients at a
range of functional levels in a variety of settings both one-to-one and in groups.
"With the growth of the geriatric population, clients are increasingly presenting with limitations that
impede traditional clinical interventions," said Shelley Berman, LCSW, DCSW, Community Relations Coordinator
at The Jewish Home and facilitator of the conference. "Incorporating art, drama, movement and music opens
doors for self-expression despite cognitive and physical deficits. Through a variety of media, practitioners
can facilitate communication for their clients and strengthen the therapeutic process.".
The program is approved for three Continuing Education Credit hours from the National Association
of Social Workers CT Chapter. In addition, The Jewish Home is accredited by the Connecticut State Medical
Society to sponsor continuing education medical education for physicians. The Jewish Home for the Elderly
designates this educational activity for a maximum of three credit hours in category one credit toward the
AMA Physicians’ Recognition Award.
For more information about the conference, or to register, contact Ms. Berman at 203-365-6495 or sberman@jhe.org.
There is a $25 fee for the conference. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunches. A dessert buffet will
be provided. The conference will be in the Therapeutic Recreation Center at The Jewish Home located at 175 Jefferson
St. in Fairfield. Seating is limited. Reservations will be accepted in the order they are received.
